LATEST MH4U ARTICLE UPDATE: Made a new Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Guild Quest Monster Unlocking Guide, which now includes G-rank monsters.

Keeping track of everything in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate can feel like a job sometimes. A job that behooves some to call in sick with their real jobs for the sake of monster-hunting progress.

Bad, Doodle, bad.g

To help folks get their groove on and hopefully not get fired, I have covered the new features of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and also served up a guide for beginners. I even detailed how to upgrade your canteen for food buffs and the Wycoon cart for easily acquiring items like honey and blue mushrooms. Now it's time to tackle one of the key additions to MH4U: guild quests at the Everwood (not to be confused with key quests at the Gathering Hall and villages, which I have a separate guide for). These hunts not only serve up the toughest challenges in the game when ranked up, they can also provide you with powerful gear — some of which, like Liam Neeson, come with their own unique set of skills.

Here's a quick primer on what you need to know about guild quests going in. Oh yeah, 'good luck.'

Let's doodle this, baby. So, uh, how do I get them?First, you'll need to unlock expeditions. See, at some point in your career as a glorified gopher delivering shrooms and Kelbi horns, and slaying Jaggia and Konchus in 2-star village quests, you will gain access to expeditions. In my case, I believe it happened after I finished 'The Stinking Seltas' village quest. That eventually caused a Yian Kut Ku expedition to pop up that ultimately unlocked the low-rank version of the Everwood. To unlock high-rank expeditions, doing the 'Sand Sailor' urgent quest after finishing the 3-star key quests at the Gathering Hall did it for me. Otherwise, finishing the 6-star Shagaru Magala village quest apparently works as well. For G-Rank, mine popped up after I finished the 7-star 'Glacial Grinder' Ukanlos quest at the Gathering Hall.

So what are expeditions again?Expeditions are solo quests in the Everwood that replace the free hunts of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. Once unlocked, you can access them by tapping the World Map on the lower touchscreen. A low-rank expedition is denoted by a blue monster head seal while a high-rank one is symbolized by a red seal.

Unlike normal quests, expeditions do not have a time limit or a cap on the number of times you faint. This means you can hunt multiple monsters at your leisure. Given that you can recover HP in camp, I recommend bringing items for refilling stamina as well as Whetstones for Blademasters and ammo mats for Gunners.

One thing you'll notice at first about the Everwood is that it features some exclusive monsters such as Velocidrome and Yian Kut Ku. As you progress through the village and Gathering Hall quests, other monsters such as Nerscylla and Gore Magala will start showing up in the Everwood as well.

Besides hunting monsters, the Everwood is a great place for obtaining items such as nectar for upgrading your Kinsect for the insect glaive or Cathangea herbs and seeds to bribe the old coot when multiplying items at the Wycoon cart. You can even recruit Palicoes and unlock costumes for your Poogie when they're available in the map. It's also good for mining items and gear, especially when you get a Rare map with a treasure room.

Did you just say 'rare map' and 'treasure room?' Gimme:Occasionally, you'll get a rare expedition with the word, um, 'RARE' denoted in big golden letters, as well as enough sparkles to decorate Elton John's glasses. Rare maps are noteworthy for two things: they make it more likely that a rare monster will appear to crash the party and also increase the chances you'll get something rare from gathering spots. These include rusted weapons from mining spots, which makes it even better when you get a rare map that also has a treasure room. The kind of gear you can get is denoted at the bottom of the expedition's info screen.

Your chances of unlocking a rare hunt is reflected in the number of monster head icons you get after clearing an expedition. In fact, some folks simply run through an expedition map and finish it without killing or touching anything to speed up the process of increasing their monster head icons, which naturally add up after missions. According to the official Japanese Monster Hunter strategy guide book, one head means you have a 1 in 16 chance, two heads denote a 1 in 8 chance, three heads a 1 in 4 chance, four heads a 1 in 2 chance and five heads a 100 percent chance of triggering a rare expedition. You can also boost your chances by using the Felyne Ecologist skill. You can try getting the skill by combining fish and veggies when eating at the Felyne canteen. The stewed version of veggies and drink can trigger it as well.

Great, but what do expeditions have to do with guild quests?Every time you finish one of your free jaunts in the Everwood, there's a chance that it will unlock a guild quest. To boost your chances, you'll want to take down multiple monsters and also pick up the shiny drops they leave on the ground after you punish them hard via mounting or by breaking body parts. According to the official guidebook, here are the chances of unlocking a guild quest depending on your actions. And yes, they apparently stack:

  • One shiny: 10 percent
  • Two shinies: 20 percent
  • Three shinies: 40 percent
  • Four shinies: 60 percent
  • Five shinies: 90 percent
  • Six shinies: 100 percent
  • One monster hunted: 80 percent
  • Two monsters hunted: 100 percent

Note that Everwood monsters have a tendency to flee so you'll want to hunt them before they do so. Depending on the number of monsters you take down, you also have a chance of unlocking double monster quests, which increase rewards and also lower each monster's base HP. The chances for a double quest per hunted monster are:

  • One monster: 0 percent
  • Two monsters: 35 percent
  • Three monsters: 50 percent
  • Four monsters: 75 percent
  • Five monsters: 100 percent

Cool, I unlocked a guild quest. Uh, where the heck is it?Guild quests first show up in a holding queue, which you can access by pressing the 'START' button to bring up the main menu and clicking on 'Guild Quests' on the second page. Once you start racking up guild quests, you'll want to make sure you manage your quest pool queue before it fills up. It can store a good amount but it's not bottomless, for sure. Storage for quests that you move from the holding queue to the registered queue is even more limited so you'll want to pick the ones you really want. Normally, the type of monster and the kind of equipment you can unlock with the mission will be the determining factors to the guild quests you end up registering. Also note that registering a quest takes it out of the holding que permanently. That means deleting it from the registered queue deletes it forever, too, so you'll want to make sure you've gotten everything you want from that quest before you get rid of it. Otherwise, you can share the quest with a friend so they have a copy of it, though keep in mind that doing so will reset the quest to its original level. Once you've registered a quest, you can go to the Guild Hall and take it like a normal quest via the low-rank and high-rank Questatrix ladies. It will be under 'Guild Quests.' Makes sense, right?

Alrighty, how do these quests work?Although guild quests look similar to expeditions, they have some key differences. For starters, you can bring other people. That especially becomes important as you clear missions because finishing the guild quests ranks them up and makes them more difficult. This means the monsters get stronger, presenting the toughest challenge in the game once maxed out to level 140. I'm talking extreme monsters capable of carting even well-geared hunters in a jiffy and bouncing attacks unless cleansed. So you're probably thinking, 'That sounds like a lot of grief. Why would I want to subject myself to that?' The answer is quality gear and armor spheres. Just like expeditions, you can gather gear and materials from the guild quest maps, which get infinitely better the higher a quest's level. Low-level quests start with piddly battered gear for rewards but rank it up and you can get some mighty impressive stuff. You also have a 10 percent chance of triggering a rare quest after each mission, providing an opportunity for even more special loot. Naturally, gear can be obtained as part of the quest rewards as well. Granted the gap between excavated and crafted gear isn't as large with the jump from MH4 to MH4U, but excavated gear also has a chance of coming with bonus skills.

So I killed an (insert cool monster here) in an expedition and unlocked a Velocidrome guild quest instead. What the heck, man?Just because you kill a certain kind of monster in an expedition, doesn't mean that's the monster you'll get from the resulting guild quest. In fact, expect to get a ton of Velocidrome, Yian Kut Ku and Basarios when doing low-rank expeditions. That being said, I unlocked a Gore Magala guild quest after hunting Gore Magala in an expedition. As with all things, the answer really depends. Here are the guild quest unlocking rates for certain monsters. Note that not getting a quest altogether is possible as well.

NOTE: Posted an updated MH4U Guild Quest Monster Unlocking Guide, which also includes G-rank monsters and is now reflected on the list below.

LATEST UPDATE: Just got my Japanese copy of Monster Hunter X so I've started a Monster Hunter X Key Quests Guide! As for previous updates, I posted a guide on how to unlock every guild quest monster from low rank to G-rank via the Everwood. Make sure to check it out if you haven't unlocked all the guild quest monsters yet! Now on to the Key Quest guide.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE

A wise person once said, 'Haste makes waste.'

That is, unless you've played the Japanese version of the latest Monster Hunter game to death like I did and now need to blaze through your village/caravan and gathering hall quests to reach the endgame quickly in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. Maybe it's your first crack at the latest game in the series but you still want to progress in a jiffy.

Then it becomes 'He who strikes first, wins.' Just ask Charlie 'Tigrex Blood' Sheen.

For newcomers to the game, you don't have to finish every quest to unlock the next rank or batch of missions in Monster Hunter. Instead, you can finish what are called 'key quests' to unlock the next set of missions right away.

If you're in a rush to get to 10-star village/caravan quests or those tougher Gathering Hall missions to be able to craft better gear, here's a list of key quests to speed up your progress.

CARAVAN AND VILLAGE QUESTS

These refer to the campaign mode of the game, which progresses the story. Monsters are not quite as tough as they are in online/multiplayer mode but you have to solo them.

LOW RANK

1-star

Steak Your Ground

Deliver 1 Well-done Steak or Rare Steak

A Winning Combination

Deliver 1 Mega Potion

Subquest: Slay 3 Jaggi

— Pretty basic stuff. Just talk to your caravan leader, the hat maniac to unlock. No, your goofy little hat ain't worth risking my life by jumping onto a Dah'ren Mohran. But, hey, I'll do it anyway.

2-star

Ancestral Steppe Fungus Run

Deliver 5 Unique Mushrooms

Sub: Deliver 1 Choice Mushroom

Den Mothers

Slay 5 Jaggia

Kelbi Cure-All

Deliver 3 Kelbi Horns

Sub: Slay 8 Kelbi

— These quests are unlocked once you finish 'A Winning Combination.'

Chip Off the Old Blockade

Slay 8 Konchu

— Unlocked by finishing any of the quests mentioned above.

The Stinking Seltas

Hunt a Seltas

Sub: Break the Seltas's horn

— Unlocked by finishing 'Chip Off the Old Blockade.' Finishing this mission upgrades your grain/bread and vegetable ingredients at the canteen. For the full scoop, check out my MH4U Canteen Food Ingredients Upgrade Guide. It also unlocks expeditions, which lets you do free hunts in the Everwood. To progress further, you'll need to do two expeditions: Kill Velocidrome and Kill Yian Kut Ku. These unlock:

Urgent Quest: Swing Into Action

Hunt a Kecha Wacha

Sub: Topple monster while mounted

— Finish this 3-star quest and you unlock the 3-star caravan/village quests.

3-star

Boulder-bash

Hunt a Tetsucabra

Sub: Wound the Tetsucabra's jaw

— Unlocked after finishing 'Swing Into Action.'

Shipshape Skin

Hunt a Gypceros

Sub: Wound the Gypceros's crest

— Unlocked after finishing 'Boulder Bash.'

Road Work

Capture a Gendrome (Village: 3 Star)

Sub: Slay 5 Genpreys

— Unlocked after finishing 'Shipshape Skin.' Finish this to trigger:

Urgent: Nerscylla Thrilla

Hunt a Nerscylla

Sub: Break Nerscylla's poison spikes.

— Finish this to unlock 4-star caravan/village quests.

Before going further, I also noticed one more urgent pop up while I was doing 3-star quests. I believe this appeared after I finished 'Kecha Wacha Wallop,' which is not considered a key quest.

Urgent: Research Basarios

Hunt a Basarios

Sub: Topple monster while mounted

— Makes Basarios show up in the Everwood.

4-star

Pink Stink

Hunt a Congalala

Sub: Wound the Congalala's comb

— Maybe I was just sleep-deprived, but I could've sworn this was called 'Wild Palico Panic' when I first tried it. Anyway, now it says 'Pink Stink' in my mission board so 'Pink Stink' it is.

An Ice Surprise

Hunt a Zamtrios

Sub: Wound the Zamtrios's top fin

— I could've sworn this one was named 'Meownster Hunt Havoc' the first time I did it, too. Seriously, I think I'm losing my mind. Maybe I already did.

Najarala Hunt

Hunt a Najarala

Sub: Wound the Najarala's back

— Take down this snake in the grass and you'll get an emergency Gore Magala expedition if I remember correctly. Repel that sucker and you should unlock:

Urgent: Tipping the Scales

Hunt Gore Magala

Sub: Wound Gore Magala's feelers

— Gore! Gore! Gore! With apologies to JR's Barbecue Sauce. Bring down the flagship monster and say hello to 5-star quests.

5-star

Major Miner Problem

Hunt a Gravios

Sub: Wound the Gravios' chest

— Hello, big guy. Just bring him down, baby

Advanced: Odd Ape Out

Hunt a Congalala

Sub: Break the Congalala's claw

— I was reading a Japanese forum once and some dude didn't even mention him by name and just said 'that filthy ape.' I don't know why but that made me laugh. Yes, I'm easy to please.

Now do two of the following quests:

Zinogre Zone

Hunt a Zinogre

Sub: Wound the Zinogre's head

The Royal Guard

Hunt a Seltas Queen

Sub: Hunt a Seltas

King of the Skies

Hunt a Rathalos

Sub: Sever the Rathalos' tail

This will unlock:

Advanced: Tigrex Terror

Hunt a Tigrex

Sub: Break the Tigrex's claw

— Tigrex, he's grrrreat. At unlocking the next quest:

6-star

Urgent: Advanced: Heaven's Wheel

Slay Shagaru Magala

Sub: Break Shagaru Magala's horns

— Finish Gore Magala's true form after shedding its skin and you're on the fast track to high rank questing.

HIGH RANK

7-star

Skiff Scuttler

Hunt a Daimyo Hermitaur

Sub: Break D. Hermitaur's claw

— I was in a rush to go through quests so I waltzed into this quest while still using a bone weapon. Can you say Bounce City?

Hot-air Buffoon

Hunt an Emerald Congalala

Sub: Deliver 1 Territorial Dung+

Facility Facilitation

Hunt a Cephadrome

Sub: Hunt 6 Cephalos

Hunt-a-thon: Nerscylla

Hunt 2 Nerscylla before time expires or deliver a Paw Pass ticket

Sub: Deliver 1 Queen Substance

These missions will unlock:

Urgent: Skiff Competition

Hunt a Monoblos

Sub: Break the Monoblos's horn.

— Charge! Have fun Guard Point masters. Oh yeah, welcome to 8-star quests

8-star

Finish one of the two following missions:

Hide-and-Freak

Hunt a Khezu

Sub: Wound the Khezu's head

— Man, this guy… A bonafide troll.

Take a Powderstone

Deliver 1 Powderstone

Sub: Hunt an Iodrome

Either of the previous missions will unlock:

In the Pink

Hunt a Pink Rathian

Sub: Wound the Pink Rathian's head

— One of my favorite monsters to hunt. I personally find her more challenging than Azure Rathalos. Whatever you do, stay away from her left cheek… Take her down and you get:

Ladykiller

Hunt a Seltas Queen

Sub: Wound the Seltas Queen's head

— Lets… volt… in! I still remember the first time my cousins saw the docking manuever while playing the Japanese version of the game. 'Wait, did they just combine? That's awesome!' Finishing this also unlocks the Wyceum research center, which will be key later when fighting frenzied and extreme monsters, especially those that make your weapons and bullets bounce.

Nocturnal Commission

Capture a Rathian

— This unlocks a pretty cool cut scene, plus your next urgent.

Urgent: Dance of a Thousand Blades

Hunt a Seregios

Sub: Topple monster while mounted

— Say hello to the flagship monster of Monster Hunter 4G. This, by the way, provides the earliest opportunity to craft those Seregios weapons, which was quite helpful when I started doing Guild Hall quests.

9-star

Say hello to key quests galore. Here's the order that I went through them:

Black Rock Down

Hunt a Black Gravios

Sub: Wound Black Gravios's back

An Omen in the Skies

Hunt an Azure Rathalos

Sub: Deliver 1 Large Wyvern Tear

The Echoing Roar

Hunt a Brute Tigrex

Wound the Brute Tigrex's head

Forge Ahead

Hunt a Stygian Zinogre

GATHERING HALL QUESTS

Say hello to the multiplayer part of MH4U. Yes, you can still solo missions if you want but keep in mind that the monsters will be tougher. For the bulk of these, I basically formed a two-man party with my cousin, which provides just the right balance difficulty-wise. Plus we only had to do the urgents twice as opposed to three or four times with a bigger team. Then again, feel free to do whatever works for you.
